The summer is finally here, the schools are closed and my teenage children are bored. I work as an hgv driver and am away for 4 days them home for 4. I needed to think of things to keep them occupied, so I decided to look for some kind of summer school.

I found out that driving schools uk had a special offer on for the summer school holidays. They had decided to run numerous driving schools up and down the country for 15 year olds to get some driving practice. Some of the schools were already full but I found one school willing to take both children on a 4 day course. This worked out great, as while they are away at the school I can do my job as a hgv driver and then pick them up at the end of my shift.

So, off to school the kids go, with more enthusiasm they they have ever had and off to work I go. Knowing that the kids are happy makes my job being away from them much easier, but knowing what they are doing also makes me very tense as I have seen some awful sights being on the road so much.

When the four days are up, I go and collect my children who are extremely happy to tell me that they both passed their 'driving test' even though they are too young to legally drive they can look forward to turning 17 to apply for the real thing.

As we are driving home and they are talking to me in high speed as they can't contain the excitement my youngest tells me that she wants to be a hgv driver when she turns 17 as she loved driving so much. Well, this is something I don't want as although I do it myself, it can be a very lonely and dangerous thing being on the road on your own. I explain that I really think there is a better job out there for her that could involve driving but safely. She says she will think about it.

I book them on another course a week later which involves football, when they come out with their certificates, she tells me she wants to be a footballer. I forgot what it was like to be 15 and change your mind every week. Now I just let her get on with it and try not to stress when she chooses the most unsuitable careers.
