Somehow my bouncing baby boy became a gangly teen aged car fanatic seemingly overnight. On his birthday when he was eligible to drive he didn't want cake or presents. He only wanted his driver's license and the keys to my car. He hasn't had driving lessons yet, I told my husband. We should have gotten him a moped for his birthday. That would have been a safe bet but rather unpopular I am sure. No teenager thinks a moped is cool.

I had to think fast so I struck a deal. I told my son we could sign him up for driving lessons and then as soon as he passed and we were assured he was a safe driver we would take him to get his driver's license. My son wasn't exactly thrilled with this compromise but it was better than nothing so he begrudgingly agreed.

The day of his first driving lesson I was quite pleased with myself for being cautious and buying us some more time until our son was on the road. My smugness vaporized the moment we were approached by the instructor. A big, bearded, burly biker with a strong handshake and gruff voice. This was who was going to be giving my baby boy driving lessons? What was I thinking? I was not confident in this at all and wanted to back out of the lessons but I had made an agreement with my son so what was I to do but sit back and watch and hope for the best?

My son and the questionable driving instructor pulled off leaving me in the parking lot wringing my hands in worry. I should have went with the moped idea I chided myself. Keeping my son safe instead of operating a vehicle. I was quite beside myself and lost deep in anxious thoughts when what seemed like only seconds later they pulled back into the parking lot. My son was fine! He was grinning from ear to ear and walked over to me with a new confidence in his step. Despite his appearances the driving instructor was very knowledgeable, professional and thanks to him my son is now a licensed driver.
